Robert Doisneau

Today, the famous French photographer Robert Doisneau would’ve turned 100 years old. He started his career in the 1930s, documenting Parisian life by adding dignity and beauty to everyday situations. His commitment to elegance, humility and serenity set his work apart from other artists of his time and beyond.

“I don’t photograph life as it is, but life as I would like it to be.” His credo was most tangible in Le baiser de l’hôtel de ville which was published in LIFE magazine in 1950 – one of his most renowned pieces.

Mostly demure and uplifting in his work, Robert Doisneau’s art is still full of surprises and accessible on the Atelier Robert Doisneau website, a wonderful source of information on the legacy of a classy man.
